Can Dry Mouth Cause Oral Issues?

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition that affects many people. It can cause oral issues such as cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.

There are many causes of dry mouth, including certain medications, medical conditions, and dehydration. Saliva is important for keeping the mouth moist and for washing away food and bacteria. When there is not enough saliva, it can lead to oral problems.

Patients with dry mouth should take steps to prevent it by drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding tobacco products, and using a humidifier. They should also visit their dentist regularly so that any oral issues can be caught early and treated.

Dry mouth can also lead to bad breath.

Dry mouth is not always related to an underlying condition. It may be caused by:

  • Not drinking adequate water
  • Nervousness
  • Stress
  • Certain medications
  • Aging
  • Cancer therapy (radiation/chemotherapy)
  • Smoking
  • Methamphetamine use
  • Injury or surgery
  • Tobacco
  • Exercising or playing in the heat
