What is a Partial Denture?

The American Dental Association estimates that about 120 million people in the United States have at least one tooth missing. Many of our patients have a few teeth missing and have trouble chewing and speaking properly. We remedy this by making them a partial denture that replaces the missing teeth. The partial denture is held in place with clasps that connect to the existing teeth. There are several different types of partial dentures, but we want to make a denture that is easy to repair if the patient loses another tooth.

Why Do Teeth Fall Off of Dentures?

Teeth falling off of the denture is a common problem we see with our patients. This usually happens due to natural wear and tear from chewing, but dropping the denture on a hard surface can also cause a tooth to break off. Fortunately, we can repair the denture without the patient having to leave home.

What Happens if a Patient Has a Broken Clasp?

Caregivers often call us and say that it looks like the clasp is floating in their loved one’s mouth. If the tooth that the denture is clasped to falls out, the denture will be loose, and the clasp can poke the patient’s lips and cheeks. If the tooth is restorable, we will return it to its original shape so the clasp can be put back in place. In some cases, the tooth may have to be removed, and we will add a replacement tooth to the partial denture.

Why Do Full Dentures Stop Fitting Properly?

Weight loss is the most common reason dentures stop fitting properly. If a patient has a health issue that causes them to lose weight, they may start to complain about their dentures being too loose. When this happens, we can come to the home and do a denture reline to make them fit properly if using an adhesive isn’t helping.

What is a Denture Reline?

When we reline dentures, we are lining the inside of the denture with a special gel that will set up and allow the denture to properly fit the current shape of the patient’s mouth. We use VOCO reline gel because it lasts longer and is less prone to peeling. To create a comfortable fit for the patient, we can use a combination of hard and soft reline materials.
