In these videos, Dr. Kauffman and Dr. Mosery talk about denture fabrication and repair services available for homebound dementia patients in Staten Island and Brooklyn.
While dentures are incredibly important and useful, they can cause a few issues, especially for elderly dementia patients. Whether your loved one’s dentures need to be fully replaced or just need a small repair, Dr. Mosery is able to help. He helps home bound patients in Brooklyn and Staten Island get the denture care they need.
What is a Denture Reline?
Some dementia patients are not good candidates for getting new dentures, but if their dentures aren’t fitting properly, we are able to reline the denture to create a better fit. Let’s say you wore a size eight shoe, but now you need a six. We reline the denture to make it accommodate the geography of the patient’s mouth. Dentures that are too big can rub and cause sores in the mouth, so having them relined is a good solution to this problem. Best of all, your loved one can get their dentures relined without leaving home.
What Happens if You Throw Out a Denture by Accident?
Unfortunately, dentures get thrown out by accident all the time, especially in nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. If your loved one’s dentures accidentally get tossed, we can come and fit them for a new denture right at their bedside, even if they are in a nursing home or hospital. This is a frequent service that we provide for elderly dementia patients.
Repairing Broken Partial Dentures
Sometimes caregivers call us because there is a piece of metal hanging off of their loved one’s partial denture. This is a broken clasp, and it needs to be repaired immediately to prevent the patient from getting cuts in their mouth. We can adjust or repair the clasp so they can wear their dentures comfortably again.
Working with Dementia Patients to Repair or Fabricate a Denture
A lot of patients contact us but are worried that their loved one will not cooperate for dental treatment. We want caregivers to know that we are experienced in treating dementia patients, and we have techniques and tools we can use to help them. Sometimes we need to use a bite stick to help hold their mouth open. This is painless for the patient and not uncomfortable. If the patient is anxious, we know what to say to soothe them and we encourage a loved one to stay beside them during the procedure. We know how important good bedside manner is in oral care, especially for our dementia patients.
