Caring for a broken tooth – Dr. Desiree Outlaw can help!
Typically, a tooth extraction requires a trip to the dentist’s office, but GHD does things differently. For housebound patients, coming into the office to have a tooth extracted can be impossible. We do tooth extractions in the patient’s home to make the procedure easy and stress-free.
Frequently Asked Questions about Tooth Extractions
When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
Tooth extraction is needed if a tooth is severely decayed. If the tooth is impacted or there is overcrowding, the dentist may recommend a tooth extraction. Trauma to a tooth from an accident may also warrant a tooth extraction.
Many of the patients we treat are housebound and suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. They may forget to brush and floss their teeth regularly, and this leads to tooth decay from periodontal disease. Unfortunately, badly decayed teeth need to be removed.
How is Tooth Extraction Performed?
There are two types of tooth extractions. Simple extractions take place when the tooth is visible above the gum line. We will place the patient under local anesthesia, loosen the tooth with a tool called an elevator, and carefully extract the tooth with forceps. Surgical extractions require general anesthesia, and the dentist will cut into the gum to remove the tooth. Before we go to a patient’s home to perform an extraction, we do an over-the-phone evaluation and ask them to send pictures so we can assess their condition.
GHD Offers Mobile Dentistry in CT
Housebound patients don’t have easy access to dental care services. Many only see a dentist when they need something serious as a tooth extraction. Regular cleanings and oral exams can prevent tooth decay and the need for extractions. We bring mobile dental care services to patients’ homes so they can keep their teeth healthy.
