Osteoboost: A Wearable Innovation to Combat Bone Loss in Older Adults

By June 2, 2025No Comments

Bone Health Technologies, a small business funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), has developed the Osteoboost Vibration Belt—a wearable device designed to mitigate bone mass loss and reduce fracture risk in older adults. This innovation addresses the challenges of osteopenia and osteoporosis, conditions that affect millions of Americans and can lead to serious health complications.

Addressing Osteopenia with Innovation

Osteopenia, a precursor to osteoporosis, involves accelerated bone mass loss, increasing the risk of fractures, particularly in the hips and spine. Traditional treatments include high-impact exercise and medications like bisphosphonates. However, adherence to exercise regimens is often low among older adults, and medications can have serious side effects, limiting their use. This underscores the need for effective, non-pharmacological interventions.

The Osteoboost Solution

Osteoboost is a wearable belt that delivers controlled, therapeutic mechanical stimulation to the hips and spine. Unlike whole-body vibration treatments that require users to stand on a vibrating platform, Osteoboost allows users to engage in normal activities while receiving targeted therapy. This convenience enhances user compliance and provides a practical solution for daily bone health maintenance.

Clinical Validation and FDA Clearance

Clinical studies have demonstrated that Osteoboost therapy significantly reduces bone resorption activity and slows the decline in bone strength and density in postmenopausal women with osteopenia. These results supported the device’s FDA clearance through the de novo pathway in January 2024. The company plans to expand clinical trials to include men with osteopenia and patients with osteoporosis.

Commercialization and Accessibility

With a commercial launch planned for late 2024, Bone Health Technologies aims to make Osteoboost widely accessible. The device will be available through telehealth prescriptions and sold via an online pharmacy. An opt-in waiting list already includes over 10,000 interested patients and physicians, indicating strong demand for this innovative solution.

Bone Health Technologies’ development of Osteoboost exemplifies how NIA-funded small businesses are creating impactful, user-friendly technologies to improve the health and independence of older adults.
