In this video, Dr. Kauffman and Dr. Neville talk about the portable equipment and products they use to treat patients with sore gums.

Geriatric House Call Dentistry provides mobile dental care for home bound patients in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. Our traveling dentist, Dr. Neville, can provide your loved one with the same treatment they would receive in the office from the comfort of home.

What Equipment Do We Use During House Calls?

Our equipment is a portable version of what you’d expect to see in a regular dentist’s office. We have a compression unit with hand tools, suction, and water. We are able to do digital x-rays with our portable x-ray machine. Restorative work, crowns, and cleanings can all be done from the comfort of home. We have everything we need to fully evaluate and treat any dental issues your loved one is experiencing. A common problem we see with patients is advanced tartar build up. We have a Cavitron scaling tool that can remove hardened plaque very quickly. This is a good tool for dementia patients because they don’t have to sit for too long to get the tartar removed.

What Products Do We Use to Treat Sore Gums?

After tartar removal, the patient’s gums may be sore and inflamed. We apply a topical anesthetic to the gums so we can clean their teeth. Sometimes we will leave a small amount with the caregiver so they can continue to brush the patient’s teeth without causing pain. We may also prescribe a medicated rinse that will kill bacteria and allow the gums to heal. Once the gums are healed, regular brushing becomes easier and less painful for the caregiver and patient.
