We get a lot of questions from concerned caregivers about how we handle uncooperative patients. If the patient won’t keep their mouth open for the procedure, there are props we can use to assist them. This doesn’t cause any pain or discomfort. Some caregivers worry that their loved one won’t be able to tolerate the drilling when they need a cavity filled. There are ways we can work around this. We are able to stop tooth decay in its tracks by cleaning the tooth and sealing the cavity it with silver diamond fluoride. We will come back several months later to redo the treatment. For many of our patients with dementia, this is a better option than drilling considering the treatment is non-invasive, and can be done without extraneous stimulus where the patient may get anxious or agitated (which is an unnecessary risk for both patient and dentist).
